Vintage Japanese Kumiko Ranma Transom Panels (Pair), Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26M-891

A matched pair of Japanese ranma with fine kumiko latticework, warm natural wood joinery, and glossy black outer frames.

A ranma is a traditional Japanese transom panel installed above sliding doors or room partitions, designed to bring lightness, airflow, and visual rhythm to an interior. This matched pair features an open kumiko-style composition of slender horizontal and vertical members, accented by geometric starburst motifs set within rectangular fields. The contrast between the honey-toned inner lattice and the black lacquered outer frames gives the pair a strong architectural presence while preserving the delicacy of the openwork design.

These panels lend themselves beautifully to contemporary interiors as wall-mounted architectural art, especially where their layered lattice can cast subtle shadows throughout the day. They also work well as decorative inserts in a custom partition, above a doorway, or as a horizontal focal point in a hallway, bedroom, or living space. Their clean geometry pairs naturally with wabi-sabi, mingei, and Japandi-inspired rooms.

A striking pair of vintage Japanese ranma panels that brings refined kumiko craftsmanship and architectural character into the modern home.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
