Japanese Toro Hanging Lantern | Antique Garden Candle Lantern & Living Room Accent, 1912-1926 (Taisho), SKU 26M-872-2

A finely cast bronze pagoda lantern with pierced cloud-and-dragon panels, a swept tile roof, and dangling flower-bell pendants -- a rare survivor of Taisho-era decorative metalwork.

A toro is a traditional Japanese lantern used to cast soft, filtered light in gardens, temple precincts, and household shrines. This hanging toro takes the form of a miniature pagoda, its four sides cast in openwork relief depicting swirling clouds and a sinuous dragon -- motifs long associated with divine protection and auspicious energy in Japanese antique craft. The steeply pitched roof is textured to suggest ceramic roof tiles, its wide eaves curving elegantly upward at each corner in the classic karahafu style. From each corner eave hangs a small flower-shaped bell on a link chain, a charming detail that would have chimed softly in a garden breeze. A rounded gourd-form finial crowns the roof, fitted with a hanging ring for suspension. One side opens on a hinge to allow a candle or oil lamp to be placed inside, while the pierced body panels let light spill outward in intricate patterns. The overall patina -- a rich olive-gold verdigris over darker bronze tones -- speaks to over a century of careful use and natural aging.

Today this handcrafted Japanese antique lantern is as versatile as it is beautiful. Hung from a shepherd's hook or porch beam, it makes a striking outdoor garden lantern holding a taper candle or LED flameless light -- perfect for Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic garden spaces. Set on a side table or bookshelf indoors, it serves as a sculptural living room accent or entryway decor piece that draws the eye with its intricate castwork. It would also make a memorable gift for collectors of Japanese antiques, a thoughtful housewarming gift, or a centerpiece in a meditation or zen garden corner. The hinged door and generous interior cavity make it easy to fit a modern battery-operated tea light for safe, atmospheric use in any setting.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
