This hanging toro takes the form of a miniature pagoda, its four sides cast in openwork relief depicting swirling clouds and a sinuous dragon -- motifs long associated with divine protection and auspicious energy in Japanese antique craft. The steeply pitched roof is textured to suggest ceramic roof tiles, its wide eaves curving elegantly upward at each corner in the classic karahafu style. From each corner eave hangs a small flower-shaped bell on a link chain, a charming detail that would have chimed softly in a garden breeze.
