Japanese Kyodai Sugatami Floor Mirror | Full-Length Bedroom Mirror & Entryway Accent, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-825
A graceful Mid Showa sugatami standing mirror in warm hardwood -- tall, tilting, and timelessly refined.
A kyodai is a traditional Japanese freestanding mirror, and the sugatami -- literally "figure mirror" -- is its full-length form, designed to allow a complete view of one's appearance from head to toe. This example dates to the Mid Showa era (1946-1965), a period when Japanese craftsmen began adapting traditional furniture forms to suit the evolving tastes of postwar domestic life. The frame is constructed from a richly stained hardwood, possibly nara (Japanese oak), with a clearly visible open grain and a warm reddish-brown finish that deepens beautifully with age. The slender rectangular mirror panel is set within a cleanly mitred frame with softly rounded inner edges, and pivots freely on a pair of turned metal knobs mounted to the upright side supports -- allowing the angle to be adjusted to suit the viewer. Below the mirror, a slatted lower panel adds visual weight and structural rigidity, while the broad curved feet provide a stable, arched base with a quietly sculptural quality. The overall silhouette is restrained and architectural -- unmistakably Japanese in its careful balance of function and form.
In a modern home, this vintage Japanese mirror is as practical as it is beautiful. Place it in a bedroom as a full-length dressing mirror -- its tall, narrow profile suits even compact spaces -- or position it in an entryway to open up the room and greet guests with a warm wooden accent. The warm hardwood tone and clean geometry complement Japandi style interiors, wabi-sabi aesthetic spaces, and mid-century modern rooms alike. The tilting mechanism means it can be angled precisely for dressing, yoga, or simply admiring the light. A rare and characterful piece of Japanese antique furniture, it also makes a truly thoughtful housewarming gift for lovers of handcrafted Japanese design.
