Japanese Sugatami Floor Mirror | Full-Length Dressing Mirror & Bedroom Accent, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-711
A stately mid-century cheval mirror in deeply lacquered hardwood -- tilting, freestanding, and full of quiet character.
A sugatami is a traditional Japanese dressing mirror, historically placed in the bedroom or dressing area to assist with kimono preparation and daily grooming. This handsome freestanding example dates to the Mid Showa period, when Japanese furniture makers began blending classical forms with modest Western influences -- resulting in pieces that feel at once familiar and distinctly Japanese. The mirror pivots on a pair of rounded knob pins set into gently tapering uprights, allowing the angle to be adjusted with ease. The base is a well-proportioned trestle design with scrolled feet, all turned in a rich dark-brown finish that speaks to careful craftsmanship. The back panel, visible in one image, reveals a warm straight-grained wood -- likely sugi (cryptomeria) or a similar softwood used as backing -- while the frame itself is built from a boldly figured hardwood, possibly kaki (persimmon) or keyaki (zelkova), with the characteristic swirling grain visible at the lower body panel. A pair of horizontal rails below the mirror glass add both structural rigidity and a quietly decorative horizontal rhythm.
Today, this vintage Japanese floor mirror brings effortless warmth to a modern bedroom, dressing room, or entryway. Its full-length reflective surface makes any space feel larger and brighter -- a practical asset as well as a Japandi style statement. Stand it in a bedroom corner for a sculptural dressing mirror, position it in an entryway as a functional yet striking focal point, or use it in a home studio or boutique as a display-ready full-length mirror. The rich wood tones pair beautifully with natural linen, rattan, and neutral plaster walls, complementing both wabi-sabi aesthetic interiors and mid-century modern schemes. A rare and thoughtful housewarming gift or gift for collectors of Japanese antique furniture.
