Japanese Style Mizuya Kitchen Chest

Custom-order reference example; the pictured piece is shown for inspiration and is not available for purchase.

Overview

This Japanese style mizuya kitchen chest is a tall two-section storage cabinet designed for kitchen and dining use. In plain English, a mizuya is a kitchen cupboard or service cabinet, and this custom-order reference example combines open shelving, sliding-door storage, and lower drawers within a compact footprint. The documented specifications list elm wood construction with a natural finish and overall measurements of 54” wide, 16” deep, and 84” high.

Design Details

The upper section includes a mix of open shelves and enclosed compartments, allowing tableware and kitchen items to be stored either visibly or behind doors. Lattice-front sliding panels at the top and lower cabinet give the piece a Japanese-inspired architectural look while also softening the appearance of stored contents. A broad work surface between the upper and lower sections adds useful serving or preparation space.

At the center, the cabinet features a pair of solid sliding doors accented with decorative pulls. The lower section continues the practical storage layout with additional sliding compartments and two drawers fitted with metal handles. The overall design reads as a functional kitchen chest with a strong tansu-inspired character adapted to a mizuya form.
