Japanese Isho Tansu Kimono Chest | Antique Wardrobe & Bedroom Storage Cabinet, 1912-1926 (Taisho), SKU 26M-A049
A rare three-section isho tansu in warm-toned wood, brimming with hand-fitted compartments, sliding doors, and cast metal hardware -- a masterwork of Taisho-era Japanese antique furniture.
An isho tansu is a traditional Japanese clothing chest designed specifically for storing folded kimono and formal garments. Constructed in three stackable sections, this handcrafted example dates to the Taisho period (1912-1926) -- an era that blended classical tansu-making traditions with a growing refinement in joinery and finish. The carcass is built from richly grained wood with a warm amber tone and tight, straight grain consistent with keyaki (zelkova) or a similarly fine-textured hardwood, its surface developing a luminous patina over a century of use. The upper section features sliding panel doors concealing interior compartments fitted with small pull-out drawers and open shelving -- precisely the arrangement a kimono keeper would use for accessories, folded obi, and delicate items. A row of small drawers spans the lower half of the upper section, each fitted with cast metal bail pulls of a decorative oval form. The generous middle section opens via a pair of hinged doors with carved wooden handles adorned with silk tassels, revealing a large interior suited to hanging or folding full-length robes. The lower section presents a series of broad, shallow pull-out drawers -- ideal for laying kimono flat without creasing -- each equipped with the same cast metal hardware. Heavy black iron corner brackets and strap hinges reinforce the joinery at every junction, a hallmark of quality isho tansu construction.
In a modern home, this monumental isho tansu brings the warmth and wabi-sabi aesthetic of Taisho Japan into any living space. Use it as a bedroom wardrobe or linen cabinet, its wide shallow drawers perfectly suited to folded bedding, sweaters, and scarves. Styled in a Japandi or minimalist decor scheme, it serves equally well as a statement entryway cabinet or a living room storage console -- the three-section format means each unit can also be used independently. The interior compartments adapt beautifully to a home office storage role, organizing files, stationery, and supplies behind closed doors. A truly exceptional gift for collectors of Japanese antique furniture or anyone who appreciates heirloom-quality craftsmanship.
