Japanese Mizuya Tansu Kitchen Chest | Antique Sideboard & Living Room Storage Cabinet, 1912-1926 (Taisho), SKU 26M-E414
A monumental two-section kitchen tansu with sliding doors, lattice panels, and an abundance of hand-fitted drawers -- a landmark piece of Japanese antique furniture.
A mizuya tansu is a traditional Japanese kitchen chest used to store tableware, foodstuffs, and household provisions in the mizu-ya -- the preparation and serving area adjacent to the main living quarters. Crafted during the Taisho era, this handsome two-section example is built from warm-toned Hinoki (Japanese cypress), with cleanly fitted joinery and a honey-amber finish that speaks to a century of careful use. The upper section features multiple sliding panel doors that open to reveal generous open shelving -- ideal for displaying lacquerware or ceramics. The lower section offers a rich mix of storage: a row of small pull-out drawers across the top, a pair of large sliding doors concealing a deep cabinet interior, a finely crafted lattice-panel sliding door section on the right side, and several additional small drawers stacked at the lower right. Along the base, a series of wide, shallow drawers -- each fitted with a cast metal ring pull -- complete the storage array. The drawer interiors, visible in the open-drawer images, are cleanly constructed with straight-grained softwood bottoms, confirming quality handcrafted Japanese construction throughout.
In a modern home, this statement-making mizuya tansu transitions effortlessly from its original kitchen role into a stunning living room accent or dining room sideboard. Use the open upper shelves to display a curated collection of ceramics, books, or plants; stow linens and tableware behind the lower sliding doors; and keep everyday items organized in the many drawers. Its substantial scale and Japandi style warmth make it equally at home as an entryway console or home office storage unit -- a rare find and a meaningful housewarming gift for collectors and Japanophiles alike. The wabi-sabi aesthetic of its aged wood and hand-forged hardware adds organic character that no modern reproduction can replicate.
