Japanese Toushou Fude-tate Brush Holder | Vintage Desk Organizer & Ikebana Vase, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-811-2
A celadon-glazed reticulated ceramic brush holder with interlaced openwork carving -- presented in its original kiri wood box.
A fude-tate is a traditional Japanese brush holder used on scholar's desks and in calligraphy studios to store writing brushes upright. This exceptional example is crafted in the toushou (reticulated, or "see-through carving") technique -- a demanding method in which the potter pierces and sculpts the clay wall into an open lattice of interlocking scrollwork before firing, leaving a continuous band of airy, interlaced motifs encircling the body. The vessel is covered throughout in a soft, matte celadon glaze -- a cool grey-green tone prized in Japanese studio pottery for its quiet, wabi-sabi refinement. The cylindrical form features smooth solid bands at the rim and foot that frame the openwork mid-section, giving the piece a composed, architectural elegance. A maker's stamp is pressed into the unglazed foot ring, and the piece is accompanied by its original fitted kiri wood box, a mark of quality in vintage Japanese craft that adds significant collector value.
In a modern home, this handcrafted Japanese ceramic makes a striking living room accent or home office statement piece. Stand it upright as a desk organizer for pens, pencils, or calligraphy brushes, embracing the spirit of the scholar's studio in a contemporary workspace. Its open lattice walls and pale celadon glaze pair beautifully with Japandi style or minimalist decor -- set a small tea light inside and it becomes a glowing lantern, casting delicate shadow patterns across a bedside table or bathroom shelf. It also serves as a refined bud vase for a single ikebana stem or dried botanical. A unique gift for collectors of Japanese antique pottery, or for anyone who appreciates quiet, artisan beauty.
