Japanese Hanakago Ikebana Flower Basket | Wabi-Sabi Living Room Accent & Entryway Decor, 1966 - 1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-728

A masterfully woven bamboo hanakago with a swept arched handle, original lacquered inner vessel, and wood storage box -- a rare complete set for the serious collector of Japanese antique craft.

A hanakago is a traditional Japanese flower basket used in ikebana, the centuries-old art of Japanese flower arranging. Crafted to hold a water vessel -- here, a lacquered bamboo tube -- the hanakago serves as the outer decorative form through which cut stems are composed with deliberate asymmetry and seasonal meaning. This example dates to the Late Showa period (1966-1989) and displays all the hallmarks of skilled handcrafted Japanese bamboo work: split-bamboo strips woven in an open lattice pattern with deliberate negative space, vertical bamboo ribs bound at intervals with tightly knotted cord, and a wide squared base frame that transitions upward into a rounded, slightly outward-flaring body. The arched handle rises gracefully above the rim, formed from a single supple strip of darker bamboo and lashed at both anchor points with layered cord wrapping. The rimwork is finished with a double band of flat split bamboo, coiled and bound for both strength and elegance. Sold with its original lacquered inner vessel and a fitted wood storage box -- a rare and complete offering for collectors of vintage Japanese craft.

In a modern home, this hanakago is as versatile as it is beautiful. Standing upright with a small glass vessel inside, it becomes a stunning living room accent for fresh or dried floral arrangements in the wabi-sabi aesthetic or Japandi style. Placed on an entryway console or dining table, it draws the eye with its sculptural open weave and warm honey tones. It also works beautifully as a decorative fruit basket, a tabletop organizer for rolled napkins or small items, or simply as a standalone art object on a shelf or mantle. A truly unique gift for collectors, Japanophiles, or anyone who appreciates the quiet beauty of Japanese antique craft.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
