Japanese Hanakago Ikebana Flower Basket | Vintage Vase & Living Room Accent, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-868-2
A handcrafted bamboo hanakago with deep lacquer patina and an original bamboo liner -- a rare mid-century ikebana treasure.
A hanakago is a traditional Japanese flower basket used in ikebana, the centuries-old art of Japanese floral arrangement. Crafted from tightly woven bamboo strips, this Mid Showa-era example displays exceptional handiwork across its body -- a gently tapered silhouette that transitions from a square footed base through an open latticework band and into a rounded upper body, all finished with a sweeping arched handle formed from twisted bamboo rods secured with wrapped bindings at the crown. The deep burgundy-brown tone, achieved through smoke-curing or lacquer finishing, speaks to the vintage Japanese craft tradition of treating bamboo for both beauty and longevity. The open lattice section near the waist adds visual rhythm and lightness, a hallmark of skilled basket weaving in the ikebana tradition. Included with the basket is its original black bamboo cylinder liner, which held water and kept cut stems in place -- an increasingly rare survival that speaks to the basket's excellent care over the decades.
In a modern home, this handcrafted Japanese ikebana basket is as versatile as it is beautiful. Stand it as a living room accent on a console or sideboard with dried pampas grass or seasonal branches for a wabi-sabi aesthetic that never goes out of style. The liner can be put back to work holding fresh or faux flowers, making this a functional bedroom decor piece or entryway statement. It also works beautifully as a Japandi-style storage vessel for long-stemmed objects -- think paintbrushes, chopsticks, or rolled textiles. For collectors and Japanophiles alike, it makes a distinguished and unique gift that carries genuine history.
