Japanese Ikebana Flower Basket | Vintage Woven Vase & Living Room Accent, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-868-1
A graceful open-weave bamboo hanakago with a sweeping arched handle and a fitted inner vessel -- handcrafted for the Japanese art of ikebana flower arrangement.
A hanakago is a traditional Japanese flower basket used in the practice of ikebana, the centuries-old art of mindful floral arrangement. This Mid Showa-era example is woven from finely split bamboo strips in a diagonal lattice pattern, forming a rounded, egg-shaped body that narrows toward a flat foot ring. The deep reddish-brown patina -- developed naturally over decades -- gives the basket a rich warmth characteristic of well-aged Japanese antique craft. A single slender bamboo strip is bent into a tall, elegantly elongated oval handle that rises well above the basket body, lending the piece a sculptural poise that was highly prized in mid-century ikebana schools. A removable black cylindrical inner vessel, designed to hold water and stems, is included and fits snugly within the woven outer shell -- a practical detail true to the hanakago tradition.
Today this handcrafted Japanese flower basket is as versatile as it is beautiful. Display it as a standalone sculptural accent on a console table, sideboard, or entry shelf -- its open lattice and soaring handle draw the eye even without flowers. Nestle dried botanicals, pampas grass, or seasonal branches inside for an effortless wabi-sabi aesthetic that suits Japandi-style interiors and minimalist decor alike. The inner vessel can also hold a small potted succulent or trailing vine, making it an elegant living room or bedroom accent. A truly unique gift for Japanophiles, flower arrangers, or anyone who appreciates vintage Japanese craft with genuine soul.
