Japanese Goban Go Board | Vintage Strategy Game Table & Living Room Accent, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-059-4
A substantial solid-wood goban in warm golden kaya, raised on four hand-carved lotus feet -- a collector's centerpiece for game room or living room decor.
A goban is the traditional Japanese board used to play the ancient strategy game of Go (igo), one of the oldest board games in the world. The finest goban have long been carved from kaya wood -- a slow-growing Japanese conifer prized for its warm golden-yellow color, tight grain, and the soft, resonant "clack" it produces when a stone is placed upon it. This handcrafted Japanese antique goban displays all the hallmarks of quality Late Showa craftsmanship: a thick, solid block of kaya wood surfaced with a precisely ruled 19x19 grid, crisp hoshi (star point) markers, and a beautifully figured side grain that reveals the gentle undulating lines of the heartwood. The underside retains a traditional pyramidal relief cut -- a feature known as the "navel" (heso) -- which helps the board season evenly and adds structural integrity. Four boldly carved lotus-form feet in a contrasting warm amber wood elevate the playing surface to a comfortable seated-play height. The board stores neatly in its original fitted wooden box, making this a complete and well-preserved vintage Japanese game set.
Beyond active play, a goban of this scale and sculptural presence makes a striking statement piece in a modern interior. Placed low in a living room, its warm kaya surface and carved lotus feet read as a wabi-sabi accent table or a Japandi-style coffee table, perfect alongside floor cushions or a low sofa. It also works beautifully as a display platform for bonsai, ceramics, or a single sculptural object -- a sophisticated touch for a home office or meditation corner. For Go enthusiasts, collectors of vintage Japanese craft, or anyone seeking a unique housewarming gift with genuine cultural depth, this goban is a rare find that rewards close attention.
