Vintage Japanese Four-Panel Folding Screen Divider with Bamboo Weave and Decorative Openwork Panels, Mid Showa (1946-1965) | SKU: 26M-740

A four-panel Japanese folding screen with woven bamboo panels, open upper rails, and decorative openwork accents.

A byobu is a traditional Japanese folding screen used to divide interior spaces, soften light, and create a sense of privacy within the home. This Mid Showa-era example is constructed as a four-panel divider with a warm-toned wood frame, woven bamboo or reed infill, and black metal hinges that allow the panels to fold and stand in a variety of arrangements. The upper section of each panel is open and crossed by a round bamboo rail, while the lower and central sections combine linear framing with richly textured woven material. Decorative openwork wood panels add visual rhythm and make the piece especially striking from both near and far.

In a modern interior, this screen works beautifully as a room divider, a backdrop in a living area, or a sculptural accent in a bedroom, studio, or entry. The open bamboo weave filters light gently while preserving separation, giving the piece an airy presence rather than a heavy one. Its natural materials and clean vertical lines pair especially well with wabi-sabi, Japandi, and mid-century inspired spaces.

A distinctive vintage Japanese screen that brings warmth, texture, and flexible function to the interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
