Vintage Japanese Bronze Standing Kannon Butsuzo with Pierced Flame Halo on Lotus Pedestal, Early Showa (1927-1945) | SKU: 26M-058
A serene standing Kannon bodhisattva cast in dark patinated bronze -- a commanding presence of compassion and spiritual grace.
A butsuzo is a Japanese Buddhist devotional figure, and this standing Kannon -- the bodhisattva of mercy and compassion -- represents one of the most beloved subjects in Japanese religious art. Cast in bronze with a deep brown-black patina acquired through decades of age, the figure stands in a composed, frontal posture with hands held in a gentle gesture of offering and reassurance. The elaborately pierced halo (kosen) rises behind the crowned head in a flame-and-cloud openwork design, typical of temple iconography from the early Showa period. Fine cast detailing is evident throughout: layered robes with flowing sashes, a beaded necklace ornament across the chest, and bare feet resting upon a double-tiered lotus pedestal (rengeza) set on an octagonal plinth. A traditional pin-and-bracket fitting on the reverse of the halo secures it to the figure -- a hallmark of quality Japanese bronze casting practice. This vintage Japanese Buddhist sculpture reflects the high standards of devotional metalwork that Japanese artisans maintained well into the wartime Showa era.
In a modern home, this bronze Kannon statue makes a striking living room accent or meditation space focal point, lending a wabi-sabi aesthetic to any shelf, console, or altar corner. Its slender vertical silhouette and dark patina pair beautifully with Japandi style interiors -- equally at home alongside natural wood furniture, linen textiles, and minimalist decor. Collectors of Japanese vintage sculpture will appreciate the quality of the casting and the authentic age patina. It also makes a deeply meaningful housewarming gift or gift for collectors drawn to Japanese spiritual art and history.
