Vintage Japanese Bronze Suzu Bell Stand, Taisho (1912-1926) | SKU: 26M-945

A cast bronze ritual bell stand with openwork base and globe bells, draped in rich verdigris patina from nearly a century of quiet presence.

A suzu is a traditional Japanese spherical bell, long used in Shinto ritual, theatrical performance, and ceremonial procession to produce a soft, resonant jingle believed to summon the attention of the divine. This cast bronze stand -- designed to display or suspend such bells -- features a slender upright finial rising from a pierced circular base decorated with foliate and scrollwork motifs in relief. Multiple globe-form bells are mounted at the arms of the base, each hollow and slit to produce their characteristic gentle ring. The openwork casting technique, fine surface detailing, and overall proportions are consistent with skilled Japanese bronze foundry work of the Taisho period, and the deep olive-green verdigris that has developed across the surface only enhances its character as a piece of handcrafted Japanese vintage metalwork.

Today this striking sculptural object makes a compelling living room accent or altar display -- its organic silhouette and aged patina lending an immediate wabi-sabi aesthetic to any shelf, console, or meditation corner. It sits beautifully alongside incense burners, small ceramics, or dried botanicals as part of a curated Japandi-style vignette. Equally at home on a home office desk as a one-of-a-kind conversation piece, or presented as a unique gift for collectors of Japanese vintage pieces and Japanophiles who appreciate objects with ritual history and visual soul.

A rare and evocative piece of Japanese vintage bronze craft -- where ritual function and sculptural beauty meet in a single timeless object.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
