Vintage Japanese Cast Brass Temple Bell (Kane), Early Showa 1927-1945 | SKU: 26M-769-2
A compact cast-brass temple bell with raised seal script and original braided cord -- a rare and meditative piece of vintage Japanese metalwork.
A kane is a traditional Japanese cast-metal bell used in Buddhist temples, household altars (butsudan), and ritual settings to mark the beginning of prayer or meditation. This compact example is cast in solid brass with a satisfying heft and a squared, pillow-like body -- a form more unusual than the standard cylindrical temple bell. Each face of the body is framed by raised border lines, with one panel bearing an inset cartouche of raised seal-script characters, likely a devotional or auspicious inscription. A small cast loop at the crown threads through a braided gold silk cord ending in a tassel, allowing the bell to be suspended and struck freely. The underside reveals the characteristic open mouth slot of a Japanese pellet bell or striker-style kane. The surface carries a rich olive-green patina over the brass -- a natural oxidation that speaks to decades of age and use -- with warm gold tones still glowing along the raised relief lines.
This handcrafted Japanese vintage bell is a wonderful object for collectors drawn to wabi-sabi aesthetic and the quiet beauty of vintage Japanese ritual craft. Hung near a window or doorway, it functions beautifully as a wind chime or entry chime, producing a soft, clear tone. On a meditation altar or zen-inspired shelf, it serves as a striking living room accent or meditation room focal point. It also makes a deeply considered gift for collectors, a unique housewarming gift, or a meaningful present for anyone drawn to Japandi style decor. Compact enough to display on a bookshelf or bedside table, this bell brings an authentic resonance of early Showa-era Japan into any modern interior.
