Antique Japanese Hanaike Flower Vase/Okimono (SKU 25D-182-2)
Taishō-period bronze bud vase in the form of an organic gourd with applied foliage
This charming small bronze vase is modeled after a hyōtan (gourd), a long‑standing auspicious motif in Japanese art associated with good fortune and protection. The sculptural neck rises gracefully from the rounded body, opening into a vertical mouth, while the dark, time-softened patina lends the piece a quiet, understated presence typical of early 20th‑century metalwork.
Delicately cast vine leaves, tendrils, and fruit are applied in relief around the upper section and shoulder, creating a lively contrast against the smooth body. Likely intended as a single‑stem ikebana bud vase, it would sit beautifully in a tokonoma alcove or on a scholar’s desk, adding an authentic Taishō-era accent to any Japanese interior or wabi‑sabi inspired display.
