The lift-top lid is secured by a substantial iron latch mechanism mounted on a pair of decorative iron escutcheon plates, each adorned with raised boss details and fine chased borders -- hallmarks of skilled Meiji-era ironwork. A keyhole with a small period key on its original cord completes the locking system. Iron ring carry handles are mounted on opposing sides for portability, and reinforcing iron corner strips run vertically at each edge, giving the box a fortified, architectural presence. The unfinished interior is clean and spacious, with mortise slots at the base suggesting the box may once have sat within a fitted stand or rack.
