This compact yet formidable example is built from richly aged hardwood planks, darkened over more than a century of use to a deep amber-brown patina. The construction is characteristically robust: thick-cut boards are reinforced at every edge and corner with hand-forged iron strapping, secured by rows of dome-headed iron studs that run along all faces of the box. A hinged top lid opens to reveal the main interior cavity, and a round aperture cut into the lid panel allowed coins or notes to be deposited without fully opening the box -- a functional detail seen on merchant cash boxes and temple offertory chests alike. A secondary side door with its own iron hasp and latch hardware provides a separate access point, consistent with merchant strongbox design of the period.
