Antique Japanese Garasudo-Dana Glass Sliding Door Display Cabinet with Drawers, Taisho period, circa 1920s | SKU: 25D-E023
A wide-format sugi display cabinet with glass sliding doors and a row of pull-out drawers below -- a rare survivor of Taisho-era commercial craftsmanship.
A garasudo-dana is a traditional Japanese cabinet fitted with glass sliding doors -- "garasudo" meaning glass door in Japanese -- a form that became fashionable during the Taisho period as Western influences blended with Japanese joinery traditions. This substantial piece, dating to around the 1920s, was likely made for a merchant shop or affluent household to display goods, books, or prized objects behind its clear glass panels. The frame and carcass are constructed from sugi (Japanese cryptomeria/cedar), identifiable by the straight, warm-toned grain visible throughout the side panels, drawer fronts, and interior shelving. The wood has mellowed to a rich amber tone over a century of use. The front features a wide upper display section with glass sliding doors running in traditional grooved wooden tracks, allowing easy access to the open interior shelf. Below, a row of pull-out drawers fitted with cast metal ring pulls provides concealed storage -- a practical pairing of display and function typical of antique Japanese antique furniture from this era.
In a modern home, this handcrafted Japanese display cabinet works beautifully as a living room accent piece -- style it with books, ceramics, or curated collectibles visible through the glass doors for a refined Japandi aesthetic. The open back, as noted, can be fitted with wood or glass panels on request, making it equally suitable as a room divider or freestanding display unit in an open-plan space. The drawer section offers discreet home office storage for papers, stationery, or small accessories. Its low, horizontal silhouette also lends itself well to use as a media console or entryway furniture statement. A distinctive and generous housewarming gift for collectors and Japanophiles alike.
