Antique Japanese Clothing Tansu with Sliding Door Cabinet and Multiple Drawers, Taisho Period (1912-1926) | SKU: 26M-A479
A stately Taisho-era clothing tansu in warm honey-toned wood, with sliding door cabinet, multiple drawers, and original ironwork hardware -- a rare piece of antique Japanese furniture in outstanding condition.
A tansu is a traditional Japanese storage chest, crafted for organizing kimono, folded garments, and household valuables across generations. This handsome example dates to the Taisho period (1912-1926), a golden age of Japanese craft when tansu makers refined their techniques to produce furniture that was at once rigorously functional and quietly elegant. The piece is constructed from a straight-grained hardwood -- consistent in appearance with kiri (paulownia) -- finished to a warm amber tone that has deepened beautifully with age. The upper section features a pair of sliding doors (hikido) that conceal a shelved interior, flanked by flower-form cast metal pull recesses on each panel. Beneath the sliding cabinet, a row of smaller pull-out drawers handles finer accessories, while two generous full-width drawers at the base offer substantial garment storage. Each drawer is fitted with a D-ring metal bail pull suspended from a round escutcheon, and select drawers retain their original lock cylinders -- one complete with its antique key. Black lacquered corner reinforcement brackets protect the upper edges, a hallmark of quality tansu construction. The overall joinery is precise, the drawer action smooth, and the warm linear grain of the wood panels reads as refined and serene -- a testament to handcrafted Japanese antique furniture at its best.
In a modern home, this versatile tansu adapts effortlessly to a range of living spaces. Use it as a bedroom dresser or wardrobe organizer -- its generous drawer capacity handles folded clothes, linens, and accessories with ease. In a living room or entryway, it makes a commanding accent piece: the sliding door cabinet conceals media equipment, routers, or display items, while the drawer tier keeps everyday essentials tidy. Style it against a plastered or whitewashed wall to lean into the wabi-sabi aesthetic, or place it in a Japandi-style interior where its clean lines and natural wood tones anchor the room with warmth and quiet authority. It also makes a remarkable housewarming gift or gift for collectors of antique Japanese craft -- a one-of-a-kind statement that no furniture showroom can replicate.
