Antique Japanese Imari Porcelain Cachepot with Ho-o Phoenix Decoration, Taisho era, 1912-1926 | SKU: 26J-0678-2

A boldly hand-decorated porcelain vessel alive with ho-o phoenix motifs and overglaze enamels in the classic Imari palette

A cachepot is a decorative outer vessel designed to conceal a plain nursery pot, and this Japanese antique porcelain example is a particularly striking one. Crafted in the Imari style -- a polychrome tradition long associated with the kilns of the Hizen region -- the vessel features a wide, open mouth, gently tapering cylindrical walls, and a closed glazed base with an unglazed foot rim bearing the natural age-staining consistent with Taisho-era production (1912-1926). The white porcelain ground is richly decorated in overglaze enamels of iron red, cobalt blue, celadon green, and gilt. The main body carries sweeping ho-o (phoenix) figures soaring among flowering branches and scattered blossoms, while an upper band frames a continuous scrolling vine of red and blue flowers. A lower register of gilded and colored leaf-petal forms, framed by cobalt and gold scroll borders, completes the composition. The result is a handcrafted Japanese ceramic that rewards close inspection at every angle.

Today this antique Japanese porcelain cachepot translates beautifully into contemporary interiors. Its generous proportions make it ideal as a statement indoor planter -- simply set a potted fern, peace lily, or trailing pothos inside to let the vivid phoenix decoration frame living greenery. Displayed without a plant, it stands on its own as a bold living room accent or entryway focal point in a Japandi style or maximalist decor scheme. Its vibrant Imari palette also makes it a genuinely unique housewarming gift for collectors of Japanese antique ceramics or lovers of Asian decorative arts.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
