Description

This is an authentic antique Japanese merchant cabinet called Choba Tansu from the mid Meiji era (1880's-1890's). It was constructed from Cryptomeria (Suginoki), and Cypress (Hinoki) woods and the iron fittings were hand made including the Gunpai shaped drawer handles.

The Choba Tansu was used almost exclusively by merchants and was traditionally used in stores and shops to impress customers. These chests display elaborate metal hardware that is meant to make it look important and catch the eye of the customer.

All drawers are adjusted to move smoothly offering optimal functionality for modern living. This antique Japanese tansu will make a great addition to any home decor.
