Vintage Japanese Carved Hardwood Bear Okimono with Hollowed Basin, Mid-Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26M-095-1

A boldly hand-carved hardwood bear okimono with a hollowed basin -- a classic souvenir craft of postwar Japan.

A kuma okimono is a traditional Japanese carved bear figurine, produced most prolifically during the postwar Showa era as a prized regional craft and souvenir object. This example depicts a seated bear -- a subject strongly associated with the woodcarving traditions of Hokkaido and other mountainous regions of Japan -- rendered with confident chisel work across the head, paws, and body. The warm honey-amber tone of the hardwood, possibly sen (castor aralia) or a similarly light-grained Japanese hardwood, has been brought to a smooth hand-rubbed finish that deepens to a rich dark interior on the hollowed basin. The natural live edge of the wood log is deliberately preserved along the top opening, lending the piece an authentic wabi-sabi aesthetic that speaks to the hand of the craftsman rather than machine production. Surface scratches visible on the reverse are consistent with age and honest use.

Today this vintage Japanese carved bear sculpture makes a compelling living room accent or home office decoration in any nature-inspired or Japandi-style interior. The hollow basin is practical as well as decorative -- it works beautifully as a catchall for keys or small objects on an entryway console, a desk organizer for pens and brushes in a home office, or a striking planter vessel for a small succulent or air plant. Its compact sculptural presence also makes it a unique gift for collectors of Japanese folk craft, vintage woodcarving, or for any Japanophile who appreciates handcrafted Japanese art with genuine postwar character.

A characterful piece of handcrafted Japanese folk art that brings the warmth of Showa-era woodcarving craft into any modern home.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
