Vintage Japanese Bronze Okimono of a Puppy Dog, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0193
A charming vintage Japanese bronze okimono depicting a roly-poly puppy in a playful crouch -- handcrafted with fine detail and a rich dark patina.
An okimono is a Japanese decorative ornament intended purely for display, traditionally placed in the tokonoma (alcove) of a home or on a scholar's desk as an object of quiet contemplation and good cheer. This compact bronze figure renders a chubby, rounded puppy in a crouching pose -- one front paw raised as if caught mid-play -- with finely cast fur texture on the paws, ears, and flanks contrasting beautifully against the smooth, burnished body. The face is rendered in a stylized manner characteristic of mid-Showa decorative bronzes, with wide-set eyes and a broad, endearing muzzle that lends the piece an almost sculptural warmth. A tightly curled tail loops at the rear, adding a final touch of whimsy. The overall dark brown patina carries reddish undertones where the metal catches the light, evidence of age and careful handling. An impressed maker's mark is present on the flat base, though not fully legible. This is a confident example of vintage Japanese craft -- compact, solid, and full of character.
Today this delightful vintage Japanese bronze figurine translates effortlessly into modern interior settings. Display it on a living room shelf or mantle as a wabi-sabi aesthetic accent, tuck it onto a home office desk as an inspiring sculptural companion, or present it as a unique gift for collectors, dog lovers, or Japanophiles. Its compact footprint makes it equally at home on a bookshelf, beside a potted plant in a Japandi style arrangement, or grouped with other okimono on a curio tray. The piece carries genuine age and artistry that no reproduction can replicate.
