Vintage Japanese Tray Stand for Serving Food, Late Showa (1966-1989) | SKU: 26J-0301

A compact square wooden tray stand with dramatic figured grain and decorative openwork sides, made to elevate a serving tray for floor-level dining.

This vintage Japanese serving stand is formed as a low square frame with a removable top ring that sits over a recessed interior support. The sides are cut with flowing cloud-like openings that lighten the form visually while keeping the stand sturdy. The wood surface shows a richly patterned grain throughout, and the interior is finished in a dark glossy lacquer-like coating that contrasts with the warmer outer wood tone. Sized for use close to the floor, it was designed to hold and raise a food tray or serving surface during meals, creating a practical and elegant presentation.

Today, this piece remains useful as a tray stand and also lends itself beautifully to display. Its low profile and sculptural silhouette make it well suited for presenting a tea service, seasonal arrangement, bonsai, ceramic vessel, or other curated object in a living room or entryway. The removable top frame and open sides give it visual depth from every angle, making it an appealing accent for interiors that appreciate vintage Japanese craftsmanship and functional design.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
