This antique iron jizai kagi (自在鉤), or adjustable hearth hook, is a striking example of traditional Japanese craftsmanship from the late Edo to Meiji period. Unlike those with bamboo bodies, this piece is constructed entirely from forged iron and cedar wood, giving it a robust, industrial character suited for enduring daily use around the irori (sunken hearth).

The counterweight — beautifully shaped and darkened from years of use — balanced the adjustable arm, allowing the height of a kettle or pot to be precisely set over the fire. The hand-forged hook and chain show subtle irregularities that speak to its handmade origin, while the weathered patina tells the story of countless shared meals and warm gatherings.

Both utilitarian and artistic, this iron jizai kagi embodies the wabi-sabi aesthetic — beauty found in imperfection and age. Today, it stands as a rare artifact of Japanese domestic life, perfect as a decorative statement or a meaningful addition to a collection of traditional tools and folk art.
