Vintage Japanese Dried Hyotan (Gourd) Ikebana Vase, 1990s, Heisei Era (SKU 25D-440-4)

Heisei-era gourd-form ikebana vase with warm, mottled patina and original tomobako box

This softly rounded Japanese vase evokes the rustic charm of a dried hyōtan (gourd), a cherished motif associated with good fortune and abundance. Crafted in the late 20th century, its surface is finished in a rich amber-brown with darker speckling that recalls natural bark or weathered leather, giving the piece a calm, organic presence ideal for contemporary wabi-sabi interiors.

The inset cylindrical mouth creates a deep well for arranging a few select stems in the spirit of ikebana, while a small metal suspension fitting with decorative cord hints that it can also be displayed as a hanging vase (kakehana). Presented with its fitted wooden tomobako storage box, this vintage Japanese vase offers both functional elegance and collectible appeal for lovers of Heisei-era design.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
