Vintage Japanese Ikebana / Decorative Vase, 1990s, Heisei Era (SKU 25D-228-2)
Heisei-era studio ceramic vase in the form of a traditional Japanese water bucket
This striking Heisei-period piece reimagines the classic oke (wooden water bucket) as a sculptural ceramic vase. The artist has built the body in strong, architectural planes, then cloaked it in a soft blue-grey glaze that pools and pinholes, allowing the warm reddish clay to emerge along the “joinery” lines like exposed wooden staves.
Inside, a delicately contrasting pale pink glaze adds an unexpected sense of refinement, making this an ideal ikebana container or standalone object for a tokonoma or contemporary interior. Complete with its signed wooden tomobako, it reflects the playful yet respectful reinterpretation of folk forms that characterizes late 20th-century Japanese studio pottery.
