Vintage Japanese "Zuichou-mon Kabin" (瑞鳥文花瓶 ) Vase, Showa Era (SKU 25D-153)

Showa-era bronze vase with engraved auspicious fish and original signed tomobako

This elegant Showa-period hanaire is cast in bronze and finished with a rich, mottled patina of deep umber, russet, and olive tones. Finely incised across the front is a stylised fish, its flowing fins and alert eye rendered with crisp chisel work that catches the light against the dark ground. The reverse is decorated with gently waving aquatic plants, completing an underwater scene associated in Japan with prosperity and good fortune.

The vase is housed in its original cedarwood tomobako, brush-inscribed with the title and artist attribution, underscoring its status as a studio art piece rather than a mass-produced item. Ideal for use in ikebana or as a sculptural object on its own, this vintage Japanese vase brings a quietly luxurious Showa aesthetic to any interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
