Vintage Japanese Nichiren Buddhism Uchiwa Daiko Hand Drum with Calligraphy, Mid-Showa Era 1946-1965
A distinctive mid-century Japanese uchiwa daiko with bold black script and a red Nichiren Shu crest, combining devotional function with striking graphic presence.
This handheld Japanese uchiwa daiko has the characteristic fan-like form of a round drum head mounted on a long wooden handle. The drum face is covered in taut skin secured around the edge with visible stitching, and the front is decorated with sweeping black calligraphy encircling the center below a red crest associated with Nichiren Shu. The reverse is plain, showing the natural aged surface of the skin, and includes a faint impressed rectangular stamp near the lower area. Black inscription on the handle further adds to its ceremonial character. With its slender proportions, worn surface, and hand-finished details, this piece offers the presence of a religious implement that also reads beautifully as wall art or part of a folk craft collection.
In a modern home, this vintage Japanese hand drum makes a compelling wall-mounted accent or display piece for a study, entryway, or living room. The circular form, expressive brushwork, and red emblem create a strong visual focal point, while the long handle adds sculptural balance. It also suits collections of Japanese devotional objects, vintage percussion, and calligraphic folk art.
