Vintage Japanese Tortoise Carving, Wood, Showa Era (SKU 25D-260)

Showa-era hand-carved wooden kame (tortoise) with baby, a symbol of longevity and good fortune

This vintage Japanese wooden carving captures a mother tortoise and her hatchling poised on a rugged rock, evoking the calm persistence of nature. Expertly rendered from a single block of warm-toned wood, the sculptor has combined bold, faceted chisel marks in the base with finely detailed work on the shells, limbs and expressive faces of the turtles.

In Japan, the kame is an auspicious motif associated with longevity, stability and family prosperity, making this piece ideal as a decorative okimono for a tokonoma alcove, sideboard or desk. Complete with its fitted wooden tomobako storage box, this Showa-era carving offers both traditional symbolism and understated mid-century Japanese craftsmanship for the modern interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
