A Senju Kannon -- literally "thousand-armed Kannon" -- is the most visually elaborate form of Kannon Bosatsu, the Buddhist bodhisattva of boundless compassion venerated throughout Japan, China, and the broader Buddhist world. Each arm is said to reach into one of the realms of existence to offer aid, and each hand holds a sacred implement -- a trident, a staff, prayer beads, and other ritual objects -- all carved here with extraordinary precision from a single warm-toned hardwood. The central figure is seated in meditation upon an open lotus throne, robes falling in soft folds, the primary hands raised in anjali mudra (the prayer gesture), while a crown of smaller devotional heads rises above the serene, downcast face. Behind the figure, a great mandorla -- a circular flaming halo -- radiates densely carved rays in all directions, its outer edge alive with carved flame tongues and a small cast metal roundel set at the apex. This level of carving ambition, from the stacked crown heads to the individually articulated arms fanning outward across the halo, marks it as the work of a highly skilled craftsman, consistent with mid-Showa era devotional production.
