Vintage Japanese Hammered Tin Chazutsu Tea Caddy, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0205-8

A handcrafted hammered tin tea caddy with double-lid construction and a leaf-shaped scoop -- a refined piece of vintage Japanese craft for the modern home.

A chazutsu is a traditional Japanese tea caddy used to store loose-leaf tea, keeping it fresh and protected from moisture and light. This example, dating to the mid-Showa era, is a fine specimen of handcrafted Japanese metalwork: the cylindrical body is worked entirely in hammered tin, producing an all-over dimpled texture that deepens the warm reddish-brown patina developed over decades of use. Faint traces of verdigris at the seams add to its authentic aged character. The base bears a craftsman's impressed seal -- a mark of the maker's pride typical of quality Japanese vintage metalwork from this period. The double-lid construction is a hallmark of quality chazutsu design: a smoothly fitted outer tin lid covers a secondary inner metal liner lid fitted with a small brass knob, creating an airtight seal to preserve the tea's fragrance and flavor. A charming leaf-shaped tin scoop is included, its surface textured to match the canister body.

Today this handsome little canister lends itself beautifully to a range of modern uses. Keep it on a kitchen counter or tea tray to store loose-leaf tea, coffee beans, or specialty spices -- its compact size and secure double lid make it perfectly practical. On a home office desk or bathroom vanity it works equally well as a small organizer for pins, jewelry, or cosmetic accessories. Styled alongside ceramics or natural linen, it brings instant wabi-sabi aesthetic warmth to any living room accent shelf or Japandi-style interior. It also makes an exceptionally thoughtful and unique gift for tea lovers, collectors of Japanese vintage pieces, or anyone who appreciates handcrafted design.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
