Vintage Japanese Tin Chazutsu Tea Canister, Mid-Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0205-4

A hand-hammered tin tea canister with iridescent patina and silver-tone inner liner -- a rare example of mid-century Japanese metalcraft.

A chazutsu is a traditional Japanese tea canister used to store loose-leaf tea, keeping it fresh and protected from light and moisture. This exceptional example is crafted from hammered tin, its entire surface worked by hand into a dense honeycomb-like dimple pattern that catches the light with extraordinary depth. Over decades, the tin has developed a rich, iridescent patina shifting between deep indigo, slate blue, and warm brown -- a natural transformation that collectors of vintage Japanese craft prize above all else. A decorative wavy seam runs vertically along the body, accented with a row of small brass rivets that add a refined artisanal character. The flat outer lid fits snugly over the body, and the interior reveals a separate silver-tone metal liner with its own fitted inner lid topped by a small brass knob -- a two-part construction typical of quality Japanese chazutsu designed to seal tea against air and humidity. An impressed maker's seal is stamped into the base, a mark of a skilled craftsman, though the characters are not fully legible. This is a distinguished piece of handcrafted Japanese metalwork from the mid-Showa era.

In a modern home, this compact and sculptural canister earns a place well beyond the tea shelf. Stand it on a kitchen counter or tea tray as a living room accent that sparks conversation, or use it on a home office desk to hold small items -- paper clips, pen nibs, or rolled notes. Its wabi-sabi aesthetic and iridescent tin surface make it equally at home on a bathroom shelf holding cotton buds or a bedroom nightstand holding rings and earrings. Compact enough to display in a curio cabinet alongside other Japanese vintage metalwork, it also makes a unique housewarming gift or a considered gift for collectors of Japanese craft and Japandi-style decor.

A rare and beautifully aged piece of vintage Japanese metalcraft -- handmade with precision and worn with the quiet beauty of time.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
