Vintage Japanese Kamakura-Style Cha Tansu, Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-C0061

A compact Japanese tea chest with richly carved floral sliding panels, glass-front storage, and a dramatic deep red finish.

This vintage Japanese cha tansu is a compact storage cabinet designed for tea service wares and small household items. Its layout combines several useful compartments within a modest footprint: a row of small sliding doors across the top, an open shelved section at left, a glass sliding-door compartment at right, a small lower sliding panel, and three drawers along the base. The facade is strikingly decorative, with an all-over honeycomb-like carved surface and bold floral relief panels that give the piece strong visual depth. The dark red to near-black finish further emphasizes the carving and adds a warm, dramatic presence.

In a modern home, this piece works beautifully as a small display and storage cabinet in a dining area, living room, or entryway. The glass-front section is well suited for teaware, ceramics, or collectibles, while the drawers and closed compartments can hold linens, serving accessories, or everyday essentials. Its vertical form and relatively compact width make it an easy choice for smaller spaces where you want both storage and a distinctive decorative accent. A characterful vintage cabinet for collectors of Japanese furniture and lovers of richly textured interiors.

A richly ornamented Japanese tea cabinet that brings sculptural texture, practical storage, and late Showa character to any interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
