Showa-era carved lacquer Kamakura style ko-bako with iris motif and richly textured surface
This vintage Japanese small chest features three smoothly aligned drawers framed by a striking, hand-carved surface. The deep burgundy-brown finish is worked in a repeating hammered pattern reminiscent of tsuchime, giving the piece a tactile presence that catches the light and emphasizes its sculptural quality.
The front is adorned with an elegant iris (shobu) in low relief, a classic seasonal motif symbolizing strength and protection, often associated with early summer in Japan. Compact yet refined, this Showa-era ko-dansu is ideal for storing accessories, stationery, or tea utensils while adding a distinctive accent of traditional Japanese design to a desk, shelf, or entryway.
A refined Showa-era accent piece that brings the quiet elegance of Japanese craftsmanship to any interior.
We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
