Showa-era style tapered tansu chest with multiple ko-dansu drawers

This compact Japanese chest is a charming variation on the traditional ko-dansu, designed with a distinctive tapered silhouette that widens toward the base for stability. Finished in a deep reddish-brown lacquer, it presents a warm, understated presence that suits both classic and contemporary interiors, from a tokonoma alcove to a modern entry console.

Eleven small drawers, each fitted with simple round iron pulls, provide practical storage for stationery, tea utensils, sewing notions, or other everyday treasures. The visible grain and gentle wear to the lacquered surfaces speak to years of careful use, giving this vintage piece the quiet character and patina collectors appreciate in Showa-period Japanese furniture.
