Vintage Japanese Kamakura Carving Style Small Drawer, Showa Era (SKU 25D-231)

Showa-era kobako-style drawer with striking red-and-black lacquer pattern

This compact vintage Japanese drawer features a deep black lacquer ground subtly revealing warm vermilion undertones, arranged in a repeating scale-like motif reminiscent of traditional amekawa (rain scales) or tortoiseshell designs. The pattern is hand-carved or pressed through the lacquer, giving the surface a tactile, almost woven appearance that catches the light beautifully from different angles.

Originally part of a small kodansu or desktop chest, this drawer would have held writing tools, seals, or treasured keepsakes. Today it can be enjoyed as a sculptural object on its own, used as a shallow tray on a desk or shelf, or reincorporated into a creative storage display. Its rich Showa-period character and bold graphic surface make it an easy piece to blend into both wabi-sabi and modern minimalist interiors.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
