Vintage Japanese Accessory Box with Hinged Lid and Pull-Out Drawers, Mid-Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0835-2
A boldly grained mid-century keepsake box with a hinged lid, divided upper tray, and pull-out drawers -- handcrafted Japanese storage with enduring wabi-sabi appeal.
A Japanese accessory box of this style was a treasured household object in postwar Japan, used to safeguard personal items such as jewelry, hair ornaments, small keepsakes, and sewing notions. This example is crafted from a boldly figured hardwood -- possibly kaki (persimmon) -- whose swirling, flame-like grain gives the exterior an almost painterly quality under a warm lacquer finish. The construction is clean and confident: a hinged lift-top lid secured by a cast metal clasp reveals a divided interior tray with several small compartments sized for rings, pins, and other fine accessories. Below, multiple pull-out drawers slide smoothly on unfinished secondary wood, offering generous flat storage for folded textiles, documents, or larger accessories. The contrast between the richly lacquered exterior and the pale, natural wood interior is a hallmark of mid-Showa domestic craftsmanship -- honest, functional, and quietly beautiful.
Today this vintage Japanese storage box translates effortlessly into a modern bedroom or dressing area. Set it on a dresser or vanity as an elegant jewelry box -- the divided tray keeps rings and earrings organized, while the pull-out drawers hold bracelets, scarves, or watches. It works equally well as a desk organizer in a home office, corralling pens, cards, and small supplies with a Japandi style sensibility. The striking figured wood grain also makes it a standout decorative accent on a console or bookshelf, a unique housewarming gift or a meaningful find for collectors of Japanese vintage furniture and vintage woodcraft.
