Vintage Japanese Wooden Sewing Box with Lift-Top Tray and Drawers
Late Showa haribako in richly figured wood, compact and beautifully made
This vintage Japanese sewing box, known as a haribako, reflects the practical elegance of Late Showa design. Crafted in wood with a deep, lustrous finish, it presents a warm, layered grain that gives the piece remarkable visual depth. The compact form is balanced by a well-organized front of drawers and a hinged lid that lifts to reveal a fitted interior with small compartments, making it as functional as it is attractive. Its polished surfaces, rounded corners, and restrained hardware speak to a thoughtful everyday object elevated by careful workmanship.
Designed for sewing notions, thread, tools, and small personal items, this box also serves beautifully as a desktop organizer or dresser-top storage piece. The interior tray adds convenient separation for accessories, while the lower drawers offer additional room for more substantial contents. At 11 1/2" wide, 7" deep, and 9" high, it offers a versatile scale suited to modern interiors without losing the charm of its Japanese origin. Whether displayed closed for its rich grain or opened to reveal its clever layout, it brings a distinctly refined Showa-era presence to the home.
