Vintage Japanese Sewing Box (Haribako), Early Showa Period, Wood
Elegant compact storage with the warm character of early Showa craftsmanship
This handsome Japanese sewing box, or haribako, reflects the practical elegance of the Early Showa period. Finished in richly grained wood with a deep, reddish-brown tone, it presents a restrained silhouette that feels both utilitarian and refined. The surface shows the linear rhythm of the grain beautifully, while the small metal pulls and understated construction lend a quiet industrial charm. Its proportions are especially appealing: compact enough for a desk, vanity, or shelf, yet substantial enough to serve as a functional accent in a thoughtfully layered interior.
Open the hinged top to reveal a neatly arranged upper compartment, paired with three drawers below for organized storage. The interior wood remains light and natural, creating a pleasing contrast with the darker exterior finish and enhancing the box’s honest, handmade appeal. As with many well-made Japanese storage pieces of the period, the design balances efficiency and beauty, making it suitable not only for sewing supplies but also for stationery, keepsakes, jewelry, or small tools. With its crisp lines and graceful patina, this vintage box brings authentic Japanese character to both traditional and contemporary settings.
