Vintage Japanese Sewing Box, 1970s, Showa Era (SKU 25D-035-2)

Showa-era itomono-bako with rich faux-burl grain and multiple drawers for elegant storage

This vintage Japanese sewing box, or haribako, dates from the mid–Showa period and features a dramatic faux-burl wood grain in deep amber and ink-black tones. The compact chest-like form is fronted by an asymmetric arrangement of drawers, each fitted with simple brass pulls that complement the warm lacquered surface.

Beneath the hinged top lid is a shallow removable tray, ideal for organizing needles, thimbles, and small tools, while the graduated drawers below offer generous space for threads, notions, and accessories. Equally at home on a sewing table, desk, or dresser, this sewing box functions beautifully today as a distinctive piece of Japanese storage furniture or as a characterful organizer for jewelry and stationery.

A handsome Showa-era sewing chest that brings warmth, pattern, and practical Japanese craftsmanship to any interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
