Vintage Japanese Hariko Sewing Box, 1940 (SKU 25D-458-4)

Showa-era itomono-bako with dramatic woodgrain façade and multiple drawers

This handsome antique Japanese sewing box, or itomono-bako, dates to the early 20th century and captures the refined practicality of the Showa period. The front is faced with richly figured, dark-stained wood whose flowing grain gives a striking, almost marbled effect, contrasted by simple metal pulls that speak to its everyday domestic origins.

Beneath the lift-top compartment—complete with a removable inner lid and dividers for threads, needles, and small tools—are an array of graduated drawers, ideal today for jewelry, stationery, or desktop storage. Rounded front corners and a clean, boxy silhouette give this compact chest a timeless presence that sits comfortably in both traditional and modern interiors.

  • Origin: Japan

A characterful Showa sewing chest that brings both Japanese craftsmanship and practical storage to any space.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
