Vintage Japanese Haribako Sewing Box (SKU 25D-059)

Showa-era itomono-bako with rich burl-wood grain and ingenious hidden compartments.

This charming vintage Japanese sewing chest, or haribako, is crafted in warm reddish-brown wood with a striking burl-like grain that flows across the facade and top. The hinged lid opens to reveal a deep compartment, while a raised inset tray on one side is ideal for organizing pins, thimbles, or small tools, echoing the careful order of traditional Japanese handwork.

Arranged like a miniature tansu, the front offers multiple graduated drawers with dark metal pulls, providing practical storage for thread, needles, and notions—or for jewelry and desktop accessories in a modern interior. Decorative scalloped metal fittings on the lid add a subtle accent, making this Showa-era piece both a functional sewing box and an attractive display object.

A versatile Showa-era sewing chest that brings the warmth of Japanese craftsmanship to any room.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
