Vintage Japanese Scroll Painting – Zhongkui (Shōki)

Striking ink and vermilion painting of Zhongkui (Japanese: Shōki), the legendary demon queller. Depicted mid-stride with sword drawn, the figure’s fierce gaze, flowing beard, and dynamic posture convey authority and protective force.

Executed primarily in bold red ink with fluid brushwork and expressive line variation. The limited palette heightens the dramatic presence, while lighter washes add depth to the robe and facial features. Vertical inscription and seal marks appear alongside the figure.

Mounted as a traditional hanging scroll with silk brocade borders.
