This example is lathe-turned from a close-grained Japanese wood -- the bold, flowing grain lines and warm amber tones visible on the exterior suggest sugi (Japanese cedar) or a similar softwood -- and finished with a smooth lacquered surface that has mellowed to a rich honey-brown with age. The fitted lid is domed and slightly flattened, decorated with a painted or lacquered motif depicting a radial flower head accompanied by lobed leaves rendered in contrasting dark tones against the warm wood ground.
