Vintage Japanese Mokugyo (SKU 25D-090-4)

Light-toned wooden temple mokugyo, hand-carved with classic fish and wave motifs.

This vintage Japanese mokugyo (wooden temple drum) is carved from a single block of pale hardwood, its rounded body opening to a resonant interior slit. The sculpted arch and stylised fish-scale panels evoke the traditional imagery of the ever-awake fish, a symbol of vigilance in Buddhist practice. Unlacquered and softly patinated, it has a warm, natural presence that highlights the grain and tool marks of the carver.

Used in Buddhist chanting and sutra recitation, the mokugyo produces a clear, woody tone when struck with a padded mallet. This piece, likely from the late Showa period, would suit both active use in a home altar or zendo and display as a sculptural object. Its understated finish and balanced proportions make it an appealing addition to any collection of Japanese Buddhist art or meditation accessories.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
