Vintage Japanese Mokugyo (SKU 25D-090-3)

Hand-carved wooden temple mokugyo with bold twin-dragon motif

This vintage Japanese mokugyo (木魚, wooden temple drum) is sculpted from a single block of warm-toned hardwood, its rounded body hollowed to create a resonant chamber. The front is richly carved with mirrored dragon forms and scale-like detailing, framing the central striking area in a powerful, symmetrical composition that evokes traditional Buddhist iconography.

Used in sutra chanting and zazen, the mokugyo’s flowing curves and smooth patina speak to years of careful handling, while the underside slit and rear sound port are cleanly cut for a clear, carrying tone. Whether returned to active use in a home altar or displayed as a sculptural Showa-era Buddhist art object, this Japanese wooden fish drum brings an authentic sense of temple atmosphere to any space.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
