Vintage Japanese Mokugyo with Striker and Brocade Cushion, Mid Showa circa 1950s | SKU: 25D-432

A distinctive vintage Japanese mokugyo set with its striker and brocade cushion, finished in glossy red and black with a dramatic carved form.

This vintage Japanese mokugyo is a compact wooden temple drum used in Buddhist practice to keep rhythm during chanting and recitation. The body is carved in a rounded fish form with a central slit opening and a hollow interior, and it is presented here with a long red striker topped by a padded striking head and a ring-shaped brocade cushion in red, green, and gold tones. The glossy finish and sculptural carved details give the piece a strong decorative presence while preserving its traditional ritual character.

In a modern interior, this set makes an unusual display piece for a meditation room, study, or shelf vignette. Collectors of Japanese devotional objects and vintage temple furnishings will appreciate the combination of functional form, bold color, and textile presentation. It also makes a memorable gift for those drawn to Japanese spiritual arts and handcrafted ceremonial objects.

A characterful vintage mokugyo set that brings traditional Japanese Buddhist craftsmanship and sculptural presence to any interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
